September 7th - 11th, 2009

Submitted by Amanda Biggar
Monday, September 7th - Labour Day, no classes.
Tuesday, September 8th - This is the first school day for all students. At approximately 9:00 a.m. all grade 10 students will assemble in the Cafeteria for an opening day address, regarding operating procedures, expectations, etc. Grade 11 and 12 students will proceed to their home room classes. Grade 11 and 12 students are responsible for finding their own home rooms. Home room lists are posted on the bulletin board outside the Main Office.
The morning will be composed of home room presentations and grade level assemblies in the Cafeteria. During the home room sessions, students will receive their time tables which include their courses, the teachers assigned to each course, and the location of each course. Students will also be required to fill out a variety of opening day information forms. Lockers will be issued during home rooms. Locker fees are part of an overall student fee of $25.00, which includes the cost of Student I.D.s, a locker rental fee, and graduation fees. A deposit of $5.00 for locks is included in the fee which is returned at the end of the year upon return of the student’s lock in good condition.
Afternoon classes will be shortened to accommodate all 4 classes which normally make up the entire day. This allows new students some time to locate their classes and meet their subject teachers for the first time. The shortened afternoon classes are approximately 30 minutes each.
Fall Sports Tryouts will begin as early as Tuesday. This includes ladies and men’s soccer, ladies’ field hockey, and ladies and men’s volleyball. All students wishing to attend tryouts should come prepared.

Day 2 operates as follows: Block B-A-D-C. Block A and B always take place in the mornings. Block C and D always take place in the afternoons. Class time is 73 minutes per block. Extra time is allotted to the first class in the morning to allow for a 15 minute reading period.

Noteworthy Items:
Welcome back to our news column. For those who are new, this is a weekly information article which runs throughout the school year. The purpose is to provide details on what is happening at Three Oaks. The column is featured on the Student Page every Saturday, along with other schools in the Western district.
Three Oaks has a dress code. The following are guidelines for what is considered inappropriate school attire: clothing or accessories associated with drugs, alcohol, violence, sex, obscenity, or discrimination. Short shorts or skirts, revealing necklines, exposed midriffs, or shoulderless shirts. Outer clothing that does not completely cover underclothes.
Three Oaks has a strict cell phone policy. The following are the guidelines: Cell phones are not to be used nor be visible/heard inside the Three Oaks buildings, during the school day (from the time of arrival until the 3:30 pm bell). This is understood to include class time as well as recesses and lunch period. The School Administration reserves the right, in special circumstances, to allow students to carry cell phones.
The Three Oaks Staff would like to extend a special thank-you to Coles Bookstore for their generous donation of books to the TOSH English Department.
In regards to ongoing concerns surrounding the H1N1 Flu Virus, the Western School Board in consultation with the PEI Medical Society, is doing its part to educate and inform staff, parents and students about proper measures to prevent the spread of this virus. We ask that parents do their part by reporting their child ’s absence to the school first thing in the morning. When doing so, please be specific as to why the child is absent, especially if the absence is due to influenza-like-illness. Influenza-like-illness (ILI) includes acute onset of respiratory symptoms with fever and cough and one or more of the following symptoms: sore throat, muscle aches, joint pain or weakness. Gastrointestinal symptoms may also be present and fever may not be prominent. If students are exhibiting these symptoms, we ask that they stay out of school until all they are symptom free.
